Paw Prints with Personality: A DIY Dog Art Project

One of my favorite ways to decorate my home is by incorporating pieces that celebrate my fur baby, Marlee. While I already have plenty of photos of her displayed, I wanted to switch things up with something more unique—something that still had that signature “Marlee” touch. That’s when I came across the idea of DIY paw art.
There are tons of cute paw print designs online—everything from Christmas trees to floral patterns—but I was looking for something a bit more timeless and neutral. This DIY paw art project checked all the boxes: it’s simple, budget-friendly, a fun bonding activity with your pup, and the final result is a subtle yet meaningful piece of décor that blends seamlessly into any room.
Here’s what you’ll need:

A Frame
I wanted something large enough to make a statement in my spacious living room, so I went with a 27x40-inch frame. I found mine on Amazon for around $40. If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, check out your local thrift stores or discounted retailers like TJ Maxx or Marshalls—these places often have hidden gems at a fraction of the price.
Fabric
I chose a soft beige fabric for a neutral, versatile look that could work in any room and throughout every season. I ordered mine from Amazon for about $12, and it came with 2 yards—perfect if you’re unsure of the exact size you’ll need or want some backup in case of a mistake. Feel free to choose a different color or texture to match your personal style!
Pet-Friendly Paint
I already had black paint at home, so I double-checked the ingredients to make sure it was safe for skin contact. You can also find pet-safe or non-toxic paints at most craft stores. Just be sure to read the labels carefully—your pup’s safety is top priority!
Cleaning Supplies
After the painting fun, you’ll need to clean your dog’s paws. I used warm water and her regular shampoo, which worked perfectly. You might also want to keep a towel nearby for easy cleanup.
How to Execute This Adorable DIY Paw Art Project:
Measure and Cut Your Fabric
Start by measuring your fabric to fit your frame. I wanted a clean, white border to show behind mine, so I cut the fabric an inch smaller than the frame dimensions. Since I used a 27x40-inch frame, I trimmed my fabric to 26x39 inches. Later, I ended up cutting it down even more—so I recommend starting a bit larger and trimming as needed once everything is in place. An optional step is to iron your fabric if it is too wrinkly.
Paint Your Pup’s Paw
You can either dip your dog’s paw directly into the paint or use a brush to apply it. I initially tried dipping, but my Marlee didn’t love standing on one foot for too long. What worked better for us was letting her lie down, gently brushing the paint onto her paw, and then stamping the fabric by lifting it up to her paw using a clipboard. This method felt more comfortable and controlled for both of us.
Clean Their Paw
Once you're done stamping, clean your pup’s paw using warm water mixed with a bit of their regular shampoo. A paw washer or pet-safe wipes work great too. If the paint seems to have dried a little or caused any irritation, try applying a paw balm or some coconut oil to soothe and moisturize their skin.
Let It Dry
Allow the paint to fully dry before handling the fabric to avoid smudging.
Final Touches
Now is the time to make any adjustments—trim the fabric for a more tailored fit or clean up any smudged areas if needed.
Frame and Display
Once everything is dry and set, place your paw art into the frame—and just like that, you have a custom, heartfelt piece of décor that adds the perfect personal touch to your space!
This DIY project is simple, meaningful, and the perfect addition to any room in your home. What I love most is how customizable it is—you can truly make it your own. From the paint color and fabric texture to the frame style and number of paw prints, the creative possibilities are endless!
